Five years. Five long and wonderful years of my life have been spent at Pine River Middle and High School. During this time, I have been taught many different lessons. Most, however, were not things from a textbook.
Out of all the lessons I've learned in high school, this is probably the one that has had the most impact on my life and especially my future. The lesson that I am talking about, is how to love others. From my very first day at Pine River, I have felt nothing but love and kindness from the majority of the people in my school; especially the teachers. Through their own actions, they have showed me how to love and care for those around me. The people in my school showed me that there is so much more than just caring about yourself.
Different groups I am involved in, like the National Honor Society and Student Council, have especially taught me to care for around me, and have given me numerous opportunities to show my love for the others. Every year, the student council hosts a staff breakfast as a way of showing our appreciation for the Pine River staff. It is one of my favorite activities because it allows me to give a small amount of my time to do something for the people who spend countless hours to give me, and other students, a better chance at life. It gives me a chance to show my love for my teachers and school staff. Another one of my favorite activities is when the National Honor Society adopts families for Christmas. Being the president this year, I had an extra special role in the gift giving. With the money Pine River raised in our annual Amazing Race, I had the privilege of shopping for one of the families we adopted. Buying toys and clothes for the four children in my family really opened my eyes. It was a reminder of how much need there is in my community. By the end of my time shopping, I loved these four children whose names I did not know; I felt connected to them somehow. It was such a blessing and I truly am thankful for the opportunity to help this family. There are so many people looking to be loved, and Pine River has not only showed me how to love others, but it has allowed me to grow into a more loving person.
Another thing Pine River has taught me is how to be a leader. From different classroom activities, to my numerous extracurricular activities, I have been able to step up and become a leader in my school. I am the president of both the National Honor Society and Student Council. Last summer, I was asked by the superintendent to be on the Assistant Principal hiring committee. This year, I was asked to be on the school improvement team. I am/have also been on the yearbook committee, prom committee, homecoming and snowfest committee. I have also ran the homecoming parade for the past three years. All of these things have required me to step up and take on responsibility. While each different committee, activity, and situation were unique in their own way, they all had one thing in common: they helped me grow into a better leader.
Being a leader comes with responsibly. To be a great leader, one must be able to love those around them. Thanks to Pine River Area Schools, I now know how to be a loving leader. This is something I will use daily in my career and is something I look forward to continue on with after graduating.
